Since having stepped away from WoW over a year ago, I've come to the conclusion that I prefer sandbox MMO's. Looking back, the games that I've really enjoyed playing throughout the years have shared that sandbox element. UO, Star Wars Galaxies (Pre NGE), Eve Online and Darkfall Online. The one thing that they all share in common is the sandbox environment. No instances, no scripted encounters and the players end up creating a large majority of the game experience. You can play on your own schedule, at your own pace and exploration is always fun.
Mortal Online is due out some time soon and it fits the mold of the sandbox MMO genre. Although it's received mixed reviews during it's open beta phase, it is still a step forward in terms of expanding the sandbox concept.

ok downloaded the game....logged in...saw the huge elephant trunk hanging down to the knees....laughed for a half an hour...logged out....laughed some more then logged back in and laughed even harder.
but seriously...this game reminds me of Horizons.....had great expectations....but failed in the end...I doubt if I play this one.
I've not had a chance to download the game yet, been too busy with work schedule.
When I do play, it's been Darkfall, Bad Company 2 and Global Agenda.
